Hey r/interiordesign!
So, I've been in the design world for about six years โ jumped around between tech gigs and design agencies, trying my hand at everything from UX to illustrations, graphics, animation, you name it.
During COVID, I ended up working on three houses, including mine. So I got some experience of designing, picking materials, working with contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc. Recently got laid off from tech, and now my friends are like, "Can you design our places?" Now I'm wondering if I should make this a legit business. Btw I'm not going to touch anything that requires a permit, and I'm currently studying building codes on my own.
Do I need licenses, take some classes, or maybe shadow a licensed interior designer before diving into these projects? I'm located in California. I would also love to know what are some risks associated with not having a license.
Any of you been in a similar spot? Would love to hear your thoughts!! ๐กโจ
