Summary

For a beginner, it is more advisable to start with the front end. The best way to get started is to start at the bottom of the page and work your way up.

I started with python as a teen, automating a bunch of things and helping with my homework. Went on to college for a CS degree and learned Java. Been there ever since and never had any interest on the frontend stuff!

I started out frontend focused with JavaScript and jumping onto the early React stuff to create SPAs for clients from their legacy applications. I've since moved onto full stack using Nodejs and Express. I'd say the biggest, and hardest, difference is not having the visual feedback you get with the frontend. If things go wrong, you can pinpoint much more clearly in a UI than trying to find where in the stack trace you went wrong.
