Summary
Ephemeral streams on average contribute 55 percent of the water in regional river systems. U.S. Supreme Court ruled that some waterways are not protected from pollution under the Clean Water Act. Researchers used high-resolution maps of more than 20 million U.s. rivers to track these streams.
The study was led by Yale University ecologist Peter Raymond. It was published in the journal Environmental Change. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. It is the first of its kind in the world. For more information, visit www.environmentalchange.org.
