My dad passed at Xmas. My mum is still with us. His Will gave everything to mum but he had some shares and an ISA in his name, so we needed to get probate to get the ISA and shares. We did the Probate ourselves and it was not difficult at all. We did consider a probate company (£3k cost), because it seems such a legal haze and probably our nervousness about making a mistake and being slapped with a fine.
On reflection, now having done it and got Probate within 8 weeks, I will definitely consider doing ourselves when my mum passes.
I suppose point if the post is to let others going through the same that it is not difficult to do. It does make you nervous though because the information on it is not always clear.
If you have a complicated setup then legal help will probably be needed.
