I applied for a HELOC at the end of March, and I’ll be damned if a collection agency didn’t put an expired disputed debt on my credit report a few days later. The debt was medical and I disputed it. It’s all past the statute of limitations in my state. I’ve already filed disputes with the credit rating agencies, CFPB, and Florida’s version of CFPB. The disputed debt is only a couple of thousand dollars, the HELOC is $50K, and the underlying asset is $400K. Am I okay with the loan? Should I talk to my bank and tell them? Will they already know?
