So I’m looking to retire at the end of the year with about 2M in my taxable retirement account. About 1.2 of that is invested in company stock. Company is mega-cap (FAANG), but I’d like to roll lots of it into VTI/VTSAX/SP500 so that I’m safer during retirement. Problem is, I’ve got lots of capital gains to pay (most of which is long term).
My assumption is that I should wait until next calendar year (when I’m retired) to start selling and converting, correct? I believe I currently pay extra on capital gains tax since I’m in a top tax bracket.
Any neat, legal, ways of moving money around in a tax advantaged way that I don’t know about? btw, i’m in CA.
thanks
