We’re re-doing our kitchen/dining/playing area. Right now the space is not very functional and we’re trying to fix that (family of four, two small kids). Any thoughts on the layout above? Some notes:
- planning on using ikea for the kitchen
- it’s not ideal to have the fridge next to the stove, but apparently it is to code. We can’t move the stove or sink very much (or at least not without a bunch of effort/cost - currently stove vents to outside wall). Microwave will be above stove.
- we can’t fit taller upper cabinets without having way too small a space above the counter (what we currently have).
- there’s an annoying beam which also can’t be moved
- the dining area is a bit tight here. We have two kids and have guests over a reasonable amount (but we could extend the table for that). We’re thinking possibly a corner bench to save some space.
- planning to add a window on the right wall, and have some play space there and a very small couch.
- there’s a very small living room at the front of the house. Considered making that a play area instead, but the kids want to be with us while we are cooking and cleaning.
- our current kitchen is a very narrow U shaped kitchen, the U is oriented like a C, in the same location as the new plan. I tried messing with this option but it either takes over the whole space or is very tight. I don’t love the channel between the peninsula and the wall in this design, but couldn’t see a better option.
