My parents claimed me on taxes this year because of my financial situation, however that will be changing soon. I was a college student for the fall last year, but I no longer am. They're trying to say that just because I live with them, they can claim me as a dependent next year. The kicker is I plan on moving out in a few months, and they are already expecting me to support myself financially. I'm expected to buy my food, clothes, pay for my car insurance, or any expenses related to my car. I'm also expected to pay for my own health care, and items for my animal. Which all of this is fine, however I tried to inform my grandmother that I wouldn't meet the requirements to be a dependent next year, and she just said "we'll see." I'll be making way to much to be claimed as a dependent, and receiving less then half of my support from my parents. I plan to keep receipts of my food purchases, insurance receipts, clothes receipts, shoes receipts, mechanical receipts, and even a copy of the contract between me, and my landlord. Has anyone else had to go through this? Any tips on keeping up with my evidence? I plan on filing before them if at all possible to avoid them trying to screw me. My car insurance alone, and rent for 6 months would be close to 5,000 because of the cost of living. I've tried being nice about this, however I feel as if they're just being flat out mean. I have a feeling that they are lying to their tax man, or at the very least withholding information from him. I'm not sure how to go about this, however I'm not going to be taken advantage of. Will the IRS take receipts, and bank statements as evidence?
