Need Advice: Water Mitigation Company Charged 4x My Budget Without Prior Estimate – How to Negotiate Down?

Hello Reddit,

I recently experienced flooding in my home and promptly filed an insurance claim. My insurance agreed to cover up to $5,000 for mold remediation. I informed the water mitigation company of my budget limit, but they proceeded without providing an initial estimate and ended up charging $20,000.

They did not give me an estimate before beginning the work, and I only saw the full amount after the job was completed. I need advice on how to handle this situation:

  1. Are there specific laws that require a company to provide an estimate before such extensive work is done?

  2. How can I effectively negotiate with the company to reduce this bill to something more in line with the original $5,000 discussed?

  3. Has anyone here experienced something similar and can offer any strategies or points to bring up with the company to encourage them to lower the cost?

Any advice on dealing with this situation would be greatly appreciated!
