My fiance and I have a fixer-upper house we are totally remodeling, including a full re-wire. I have been looking around online for an idea of how many light fixtures to install in each of the rooms, and I've been surprised at how much light most places recommend. For example the dining room is right around 200 square feet, and according to the lumen calculators online, it needs around 6000 lumens on the low end. A standard 60w equivalent LED bulb puts out about 800 lumens, so I'd need 7 or 8 just for this room. I was originally just thinking of doing two pendant lights over the dining table and two wall sconces on the wall on the other side of the room. With the natural light it already gets from the windows it seems like that would be enough. But if I go by the calculations I'd only be halfway to enough light. The thing that seems odd to me is that if I go look through pictures of people's homes in this sub or on either of the RoomPorn subs, very few people ever have anywhere near that many light fixtures in the rooms that get posted. Most only have 1 or 2 for the entire room. Other than on new construction homes that use exclusively recessed lights I hardly ever see homes with 7 or 8 ceiling lights. So what gives?
