Hi, I exceeded the income limit for Roth IRA for the 2023 so I withdraw my Roth IRA contribution of $6000. When doing so, my brokerage (I use Betterment) asked if I want to withhold 10% for taxes and I agreed (amounting to $600 in taxes).
Now I realize that this was a mistake since I am sure that I have contributed more than $6000 in my Roth IRA, so none of the amount I have withdrawn would be interest. I have called Betterment and they said they are unable to cancel my previous withholding.
My question is, how am I supposed to get that money back? I assume I would have to file something to the IRS to let them know that I overpaid taxes and would get a refund? I have yet to file my taxes for tax year 2023. I don’t want to make any more mistakes so I’m hoping someone here could help me out.
Thanks in advance.
