A new paper details how this electroreception may have evolved in the earliest backboned animals. It also reveals how completely new kinds of sensory organs were present in the ancient relatives of sharks and bony fishes, the extinct placoderm fishes.What is electroreceptors and how does it work?

Benedict King and his team have discovered previously unknown sensory systems in the placoderm fishes, an extinct group that dominated ecosystems between about 420 million and 360 million years ago. These sensory systems appear to be completely unique, although they do not resemble electroreceptors.
